SERENA WILLIAMS broke down in tears after completing one of the most remarkable comebacks in tennis history saturday.
She beat world No.1 Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-2 to become the first unseeded Australian Open singles champion since Chris O'Neil in 1978 - and only the seventh player to win the title three times.
The American wept as she dedicated her victory to her sister who was shot dead in Los Angeles in 2003. Williams, 25, said: "I just love her so much. A couple of days ago I said, 'If I win this it will be for her' so thanks, Yetunde.
"Every match I write notes. Today my note was just 'Yetunde'. Usually I write, 'Look at the ball, move forward, do this, do that'. Today I just had one word.
"Every changeover I looked at it and I just thought of how happy she would have been, how much she always supported me."
Before the tournament, the former world No.1 saw her ranking plummet to 81 as a result of persistent knee injuries. But with her pride restored, she now believes she can destroy any opponent in women's tennis.
On the evidence of Williams' domination of Sharapova at Melbourne Park, few would argue. She steam-rollered her way to victory in just 63 minutes of faultless tennis.
"When I am playing as well as this it's difficult for anyone on the women's tour to beat me," added Williams. "I was born to play tennis and I am insatiable. I know that there are things I need to work on but right now I am ready to start training on clay - even though it's a bit early for the French Open (in May) - and I feel like there is a lot more to come.
"I've had blisters and diarrhoea in this tournament, and I've been sick, but I still managed to win."
Williams revealed that watching Roger Federer and Fernando Gonzalez crush their semi-final opponents in the men's draw inspired her to believe she could produce a repeat performance against her Russian opponent.
"I was inspired by the way Federer and Gonzalez beat Andy Roddick and Tommy Hass," she said. "Afterwards, I thought 'Why can't I do this?'
"My greatest satisfaction is in proving people wrong _________________
